We realize at Habitat for Humanity Muskoka how important it is to have youth, students and young adults participate actively in building strong sustainable communities. There are a number of opportunities:
Small building projects - There are numerous small projects that make a big difference to the build that don’t necessarily need to be done at the build site. We need shelves for the work boots, sheds, and boxes for scrap wood. These can be done with parents’ permission at home or through school programs. We often have projects completed at our ReStore.
Co-Op Placements - Our Co-op partnerships with the local schools has been such a positive experience. Not only does the student get work experience in their area of interest (non-profit organization, marketing, office administration, public relations, warehouse, construction, etc) they also bring with them a great deal of knowledge and skill that can be so helpful to our organization.
Event Planning - Together with a planning committee there is an opportunity to schedule and plan special events ranging from ground breaking ceremonies to fundraisers and recruiting speakers to volunteer appreciation events.
Scrapbooking - Create a scrapbook for each homeowner family. Include photos of the build in its various stages, the fundraising events and the community.
Fund raising - Youth can partner with Habitat for Humanity Muskoka to raise funds. For events, young people can assist with planning, logistics, and event staffing.
Work with other Youth groups- Bring in your Girl and Boy Scout troop, church youth groups, university organization, high school action group, etc. There are many ways to work together.
Community Service - Every high school student is required to complete a minimum of 40 hours of community involvement activities in order to graduate. The purpose of the community involvement is to develop awareness and sense of civic responsibility in contributing and supporting their community. We welcome students to come and work with us for this time. Students must be 16 years of age to be able to work on a build site.
